Tips for Rome in 4 days
Rome is an open-air museum, and you can walk almost the whole centre, hopping from square to square in fifteen minutes. Its two bottlenecks are the Colosseum and the Vatican Museums: book both ahead and go first thing, before the tour groups roll in. Balance the ticketed sights with everything Rome gives away for free -the Pantheon, Bernini's fountains, Trastevere- and your ticket budget drops on its own. For lunch and dinner, steer clear of the big draws and cross over to Trastevere or Monti, where you eat better and cheaper. If you're really pushed for time, keep the Colosseum and the Vatican and skip the Borghese Gallery, which forces you to book a timed slot on top of everything.
